30th April, 1st & 2nd May – 1810 Batala (Battle), Algodonales
If you are in the area during this weekend then a visit to this pretty village is a must, the centre of which, during the fiesta is covered in sand to mimic the conditions two hundered years ago. The residents of Algodonales really go to town, almost everyone is in period dress and the bars around the main square set up make-shift shacks from which to serve drinks and tapas.
Throughout the weekend running battles are fought between the ill-equiped villagers and the musket carrying Napoleon fusiliers, not to forget the army’s truly ear-shattering canons. This all eventually leads to the inevitable massacre of the villagers in front of the church on the last day .
Motogp - Gran Premio de Espana - Jerez – 30th April-2nd May
Less than 1 hours drive from Olvera round 3 of the 2010 MotoGP world championship comes to Jerez, where all eyes will be on the hugely anticipated title scrap between Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa.
Apart from the expected fierce title fight between Fiat Yamaha duo Rossi and Lorenzo, Ducati’s Stoner and Spaniard Pedrosa, much attention will focus on a bunch of new talent entering MotoGP in 2010.
One of the big names is record-breaking reigning World Superbike champion Ben Spies who joins Colin Edwards in the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 squad.
The continuing battle between 250GP rivals Marco Simoncelli, Alvaro Bautista and Hector Barbera is also expected to bring some exciting racing during the forthcoming season, which kicks off in Qatar on April 11.
I consider motorcycle racing to be the most exciting sport on television, with the MotoGP Championship the pinicale of the sport, and this season is going to be a cracker.
